Art has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a home where art was on every wall. Including not only oil paintings, but also water colors and sculptures. My grandfather was a great American artist. His oil paintings were phenomenal portraits. His water colors were of Maine Landscapes. Carl Gordon Cutler was his name. The sculptures were done by my uncle, Charles Gordon Cutler. He worked with granite, marble, wood..... So, art is in my blood. My grandfather went to Europe to study & paint. I, however, am self taught. I am very fortunate to have been influenced and inspired by these two great men. I started out doing brushless Dutch Pours which were abstracts and abstract realisms. Then moved into acrylic painting. Now, I find myself working on landscapes in oil. Some of these are abstracts and some are very realistic. I’ll let you determine which are which.
I started paintings by doing Dutch pours. It’s brushless, because you actually pour the paint onto the canvas. The medium is acrylic. Next, I started using tools to help me creat abstract realism. I’ve used cups filled with various colors of paint to flip onto the canvas, layered paint into cups then poured it out. I’ve even used mallets, straws, blow dryers & balloons to create special effects. I would give the viewer an idea of what they were looking at, but the reality was in the eye of the viewer. My most recent work is in oil. I love the brushes! I love being an artist.
Living near the Gulf of Mexico has been inspiration enough. Texas is home to all six species of bluebonnets. We also have butter cups, Indian paintbrush, beach morning glories, Texas blue bells and brown eyed Susans to just name a few. Texas also has more species of birds than any other state in the US. This is because we are on the migratory route. The birds stop here to rest during their long flights. Where I live, it seems to be always green. So many evergreens! My favorite tree is the live oak. It is so majestic. I am sure this is why I love to paint Landscapes. If I ever feel uninspired, all I have to do is go for a long drive. I can drive to the beach or to the hill country. Beauty beyond measure will be found.
